Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Sly Instigator is a classic political tempo tool in Commander, rewarding decks that want to redirect danger rather than answer it head-on. As a 2/4 for four, it blocks well enough to buy time, but its real strength is the tap ability: for one blue mana, you can make the scariest creature on the table unblockable and force it to swing elsewhere until your next turn. That makes it excellent in control or value shells that want opponents to spend their resources fighting each other while you develop. It pairs especially well with pillow-fort pieces, instant-speed removal, and cards that punish combat like Propaganda-style effects or sacrifice-for-attacking incentives. Because the ability targets any opponent’s creature, it also plays nicely with decks that can untap it, such as those using Freed from the Real-style effects or seedborn-style untappers, letting you spread goad around the table and keep pressure off yourself while the rest of the pod bleeds resources.
