Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Chainer, Dementia Master is a classic high-risk, high-reward value engine for graveyard-centric black decks, especially in Commander where repeated recursion can take over a table. His activated ability turns any graveyard creature into a stolen threat, and because the returned creature becomes black and a Nightmare, you can build around tribal payoffs while also exploiting ETB creatures for immediate advantage. The best plan is usually grindy control or midrange value: trade resources early, then convert opposing graveyards into your board. Strong deckbuilding choices include sacrifice outlets, discard effects, and ways to protect Chainer, since his leave-the-battlefield trigger exiles all Nightmares and can wipe your stolen army. Pairing him with creatures that generate value on entry, or with reanimation targets that are hard to profitably kill, makes his expensive activation much easier to justify.
