Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Severed Strands is a clean, brutally efficient black removal spell that fits best in control and grindy value decks, especially those built to turn expendable creatures into resources. For just two mana, you trade a creature you no longer need for an opponent’s best threat while gaining life equal to the sacrificed creature’s toughness, which can swing races and stabilize against aggressive starts. The card’s flavor feels like ruthless black magic: a life drain paid in flesh, where one body is cut loose so another can be dragged down. It pairs well with tokens, recursion, and creatures that replace themselves on death, such as Blood Artist-style shells or sacrifice-focused strategies that want the death trigger anyway. High-toughness fodder makes the life gain more meaningful, so even a defensive utility creature can become part of the removal package. In Double Masters 2022, it rewards careful resource management and board states where tempo matters more than raw card count.
