Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Return to the Ranks is a classic white recovery spell that turns a depleted battlefield into a sudden rebuild, and it shines best in go-wide value or creature combo shells. Because convoke lets your surviving creatures help pay the hefty {X}{W}{W} cost, it naturally rewards decks that can flood the board early, then convert a sweep or combat trade into a massive refill. The best targets are cheap creatures with enter-the-battlefield triggers, anthem effects, or utility bodies—think two-mana removal creatures, token makers, or recursive threats—since each one coming back multiplies your advantage. In Historic, it pairs especially well with sacrifice and token strategies that can keep mana flexible while stocking the graveyard. A useful deckbuilding tip is to keep your curve low and your creature count high; this card is much weaker if your graveyard is full of expensive spells or noncreature clutter. When cast for a large X, it can feel like a white “second life” spell that ends games quickly.
