Oracle Text
Flying
Whenever this creature deals damage to an opponent, that player discards a card at random.
Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Hypnotic Specter is a classic piece of disruptive tempo in Magic: The Gathering, turning a modest 2/2 flier into a relentless hand attack engine once it connects. At three mana, it fits best in black-based tempo or control shells that can clear the path and keep the opponent under pressure while stripping away key resources at random. Because the discard trigger happens only on damage to a player, evasion and protection are everything: pairing it with removal, discard spells, or cards that weaken blockers helps ensure repeated hits, while equipment or pump effects can make the Specter harder to answer and more threatening in the air. The random discard is especially punishing early, when each lost card can derail an opponent’s curve, and it can also snipe combo pieces late. In deckbuilding, prioritize ways to force through combat damage rather than trying to maximize raw stats; this card wins by snowballing advantage, not by racing fair.
