Vampire Hexmage
Oracle Text
First strike
Sacrifice this creature: Remove all counters from target permanent.
Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Vampire Hexmage is a compact black utility creature that fits best in proactive combo and disruption shells, with enough combat relevance to matter in tempo or aggressive decks too. A 2/1 with first strike for {B}{B} can pressure early life totals while holding off small attackers, but its real power is the ability to sacrifice itself and strip all counters from a permanent at instant speed. That makes it a strong answer to planeswalkers, saga chapters, +1/+1 counter threats, and especially oversized permanents built around charge or loyalty counters. It is famous in deckbuilding for pairing with Dark Depths, immediately removing its ice counters to create Marit Lage, and it also plays well with recursion like Unearth, Pyre of Heroes-style creature tutoring, or sacrifice synergies that want a cheap body to cash in. In lore terms, the Hexmage feels like a sinister curse-bearer, draining strength itself rather than simply fighting it.
