Rhystic Study
Oracle Text
Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may draw a card unless that player pays {1}.
Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Rhystic Study is one of Magic’s most famous tax enchantments, and it fits best in control, tempo, and value-oriented blue decks that want to slow the table while turning every enemy action into card advantage. For {2}{U}, it doesn’t need to attack or block; it simply sits there forcing opponents into awkward choices every time they cast a spell, often draining their mana or refilling your hand. In practice, it’s especially strong in multiplayer, where repeated triggers can snowball quickly and make it hard for opponents to develop efficiently. It pairs well with pillow-fort and “punisher” shells, as well as commanders that reward you for drawing extra cards, such as those with payoffs for spell triggers or hand size. If you want to maximize it, protect it with counterspells or recursion, and lean into cheap interaction so the mana opponents spend on the tax keeps them behind while you keep ahead on resources.
